William Carey University Theatre will present an Oscar Wilde comedy, “The Importance of Being Earnest,“10月. 5胜8负 & Virginia Tatum Theatre. Curtain time on Oct. 5-7是7:30.m. with a matinee Oct. 2点8分.m.
Set in England in 1895, the late Victorian period, Wilde’s satire focuses on marriage, class, and social expectations.
The action opens in London as Algernon Moncrieff meets his best friend, 欧内斯特·沃辛, who wishes to propose marriage to Algernon’s cousin, 德伦. Algernon refuses because he finds out Ernest is living a double life in the country – where he is called “Jack” and takes care of a young ward named Cecily.
与此同时, the real Jack Worthing has told Cecily he has a ne’er-do-well brother in London named Ernest that he must visit often to get him out of scrapes. And Algernon confesses that he pretends to have an invalid friend named “Bunbury” in the country who also requires frequent attention. So, both men are living double lives – one in the country, one in the city.
Having called on Algernon, 德伦’s mother, Lady Bracknell catches her daughter in a kiss with Jack (a.k.a. 欧内斯特). She is further enraged to find that Jack was adopted and forbids the lovers to see each other.
The two men then set about trying to make right their double lives. Other characters caught up in the deceit are the governess Miss Prism, the rector Rev. Chasuble, and two servants, Lane and Merriman.
